U12 Wildcats WIN the prestigious WAGS tournament

Wildcats at WAGS

As most youth soccer fans know, WAGS is one of THE premier events of the soccer calendar; the teams playing in the 2009 event, as in previous years, represent some of the finest on the eastern seaboard. So it was with great anticipation and just a little trepidation that the U12 West-Mont Wildcats arrived in Virginia, to start their quest for the U12 WAGS Cup.

Game 1: West-Mont Wildcats 1 - Toms River Elite Force, NJ 1
On a pleasant autumnal morning, under light cloud cover, the Wildcats arrived at Occoquan Park, just south of Washington DC, to find that game 1 against Tom's River would take place on a picturesque but small and hilly pitch.

After a slow start, evenly contested by both sides the Wildcats almost took the lead when Gabrielle Vagnozzi fired against the cross bar midway through the first half. Toms River however were proving to be more difficult opposition than some had anticipated and a good run down the left by a charging Force forward saw two Wildcat defenders take her down in the penalty box. From the resulting penalty kick, Toms River went 1-0 up though the Wildcats keeper, Erin Tinneny got a finger tip to the ball on its way into the net. The half ended 0-1.

The second half saw mounting pressure from the Wildcats, which was eventually rewarded 5 minutes from time, when after a spell of frantic pressure, a cross from the left saw Katie Armstrong attempt a bicycle kick which fell for Gabrielle Vagnozzi, who expertly slotted the ball home. The drama was not over however as a last gasp one-handed save by Erin Tinneny was needed to insure the game remained tied at 1-1.

Game 2: West-Mont Wildcats 4 - Premier Academy Fury- Pittsburgh, PA 1
This was the game when the Wildcats came to life under the October sunshine. Trailing 1-0 at half-time the Wildcats struck like a tsunami in the second half. They scored 3 fantastic goals in the first 8 minutes. Taylor Newhart notched the first with a clinical strike after just 2 minutes, then Ashley Darreff added a second from fully 40 yards out; the ball bouncing over the hapless Fury goalie's head. The Wildcats were now looking dangerous going forward and it was no surprise when they increased their lead and a great goal it was too. Gabrielle Vagnozzi sent a cross into the 6 yard box and Taylor Newhart raced into the box and met it with a well placed header. The final goal came from a Katie Armstrong corner kick which was fielded by Julianne Bradbury, which brought in Ashley Dowiak, who fired the ball into the upper right corner. The Wildcats defense of Kayleigh Kardos, Molly Hynes, Ashley Darreff, and Brianna Loube held strong and the game was in the bag; 4-1 Wildcats.

Game 3: West-Mont Wildcats 5 - Freedom Extreme, MD 1
On day 2 the Wildcats showed why they are one of the top teams on the East Coast; pitted against the Freedom Extreme from Maryland they played some "champagne" soccer. The game started with an early goal from Gabrielle Vagnozzi that put the Wildcats up 1-0. Five minutes later Midfielder Megan Gray made it 2-0 with a crisp 20 yard strike into the upper left corner. Then, on the fifteen minute mark, Brianna Loube was brought down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Brianna took the resulting penalty kick and calmly blasted the ball past a late diving goalie making the score 3-0 Wildcats. The Wildcats were coasting but had to endure a slight set back when, after twenty five minutes, a controversial call by the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Extreme which they converted making it 3-1. Second half goals from Gabrielle Vagnozzi and a 25 yard strike from Brianna Cirino, along with sturdy defense provided by Erin Tinneny, Kayleigh Kardos, Ashley Darreff, and Molly Hynes, kept the Wildcats' playoff hopes alive; 5-1 Wildcats.

Game #4 Semi-final: West-Mont Wildcats 2 - Highland Crush 1
Qualifying for the WAGS semi-final match pitched the Wildcats against the Highland Crush. The game began with a bang as Cayla Veverka put her body onto a cross from Taylor Newhart and beautifully placed the ball into the left side of the net. Later in the first half, Sarah Johnston took a thru ball from Gabrielle Vagnozzi and delivered the winning goal. Strong midfield play from Kelsey Giese controlled the Crush and limited their scoring opportunities. The defense of Erin Tinneny, Kayleigh Kardos, Ashley Darreff, and Molly Hynes stood tall. The only goal allowed was again on a penalty kick. Wildcats win 2-1, which allowed them to advance to the championship game on Monday.

Game #5 WAGS FINAL: West-Mont Wildcats 4 - Jersey United Rage 0
Game #5 saw the Wildcats playing for the championship cup against the Jersey United Rage. Three quick goals in the first 10 minutes secured the quick win for the Wildcats. Goal #1 came from Laura Suero on a pass from Gabrielle Vagnozzi at the 1 minute mark. Goal #2 was delivered again by Laura Suero, this time from Katie Armstrong. At the 10 minute mark, Gabrielle Vagnozzi finished a through ball from Laura Suero and the stage was set for the last 50 minutes of the match. The midfield of Kelsey Giese, Cayla Veverka, Katie Armstrong, Brianna Cirino, Brianna Loube, Ashley Dowiak and Megan Gray controlled the play and didn't allow the Jersey United any true opportunities. A Jersey United handball in the box allowed Ashley Dowiak to convert a PK for the 4th goal of the game for the Wildcats. A strong defensive effort from Erin Tinneny, Kayleigh Kardos, Ashley Darreff, Molly Hynes, and Gabrielle Vagnozzi kept the Jersey United Rage out of the box and minimized their offensive threat that had brought them into the final.

The Wildcats win the WAGS Tournament 4-0. WAY TO GO GIRLS and COACHES!!!!!!!!!!!!! A remarkable weekend, a remarkable team.

U14 Warriors take first place in the 2009 Delco Division

Warriors Div I Champs

The West-Mont Premier U14 Warriors team have won the 2009 Division 1 Delco Championships. They first beat Upper Dublin Soccer Club 4-1 in the finals and went on to win the championship game against Central Delaware Soccer Association. The final score was 1-0. The team has worked very hard this year and deserve an extra congratulations to the team and to Coach Bombard.

U10 Dragons take first place at the 2009 Delco Columbus Day Tournament

Dragons at Delco The U10 Dragons participated in the 2009 Delco Columbus Day Tournament. The boys came into the tournament ready to play and looking to have a fun filled weekend. The Dragons first started off with Coventry as their first match. The team jumped out to a quick lead and then dominated the game earning them a 10 to 3 victory. The ten goals were the hard work of the entire team's effort with A. Robillard leading the scoring with 4, A. Tobin scored 3, and J. Hermann, R Fortebuono and J. Catalano all scoring goals. A.Duabenspeck and J.Stone turned in a strong defensive game.

The next match on Saturday was a revenge match between the Dragons and Swarthmore who beat the Dragons early in the season 2 to 1. The Dragons came out ready to play and got to off a quick 1 to 0 lead. In the end the Dragons won 3 to 0 to advance to the semi-finals on Sunday morning. The Dragons' midfield played an important part of this victory thanks to the play of M.Heaps, H.Phillps, and C.Thomas along with great performance in goal from R.Fortebuono.

In the semi Final match, the Dragons faced the West-Mont U10 Attack. This is the second time these two teams meet during tournament play. The game went back and forth with a number of chances for both teams to score but at the end of regulation the game was tied 1-1. This lead to sudden death overtime. Both teams had chances to score but the goaltenders came up big for both teams. Penalty kicks would determine the outcome of this hard fought match. After both teams had sent the first 5 boys to the penalty spot the game was still tied at 2. The goals were scored by A. Daubenspeck and A. Robillard. After 2 more players had missed it was up to the eight play A. Tobin to advance the Dragons into the Championship Match. Adam came through and R. Fortebuono made the final save to send the boys to the title game.

The Championship match had the Dragons facing the Prussians from King of Prussia. The match was a good battle but at the end of the first half the score was 1 to 0 for the Dragons with the goal being scored by C Thomas. Early in the second half, A. Tobin scored another goal to seal the victory over the Prussians who could not score as the defense of J. Hermann and A. Robilard were just too solid. In the end the Dragons had a 2-0 and were crowned the 2009 champions.

U10 Blue Dragons Take 1st Place at Western Lehigh Fall Fest

Blue Dragons at Western Lehigh
The Girls West-Mont United U10 Blue Dragons went into the Western Lehigh Fall Fest riding a 4-0 start to the PAGS season. Their solid play over the weekend saw them post a 4-0 record in the tournament, bringing home 1st place in their Division.

Over the course of four games, the Blue Dragons scored 19 goals while giving up none, posting four consecutive shut-out victories.

Saturday's first game saw the Dragons take on the Haverford Rockets. Riding a strong defense and a solid passing attack, the Dragons posted a 4-0 win to open the tournament. Game two against the Radnor White Blizzard saw a similar result. The Dragons made use of their team speed and some outstanding midfield play to post a 9-0 victory, closing out day one.

On Sunday, the Coventry Fury frustrated the Dragons' scoring attack. Playing tough defense, the Fury limited the Dragons' opportunities, but aggressive play from the fullbacks helped keep the pressure on and eventually led to a 2-0 victory, setting up the game of the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Game four was a battle between two of West-Mont's own, as the Blue Dragons took on the Lightning for the Division Championship. Coach Barnes' Lightning came out strong, attacking the Dragons' defense and applying pressure on the goal. A breakaway goal by Destiny Hoffman and an outstanding save in net by Molly McHarg gave the Dragons a 1-0 halftime lead. A quick goal by Casey Genovese made it 2-0 early in the second half. Undaunted, the Lightning played hard, giving the Dragons everything they had, until goals by Mackenzie Doyle and Emily Moore finally sealed a 4-0 victory and the championship for the Blue Dragons. Way to play, girls! The coaches and parents couldn't be more proud of the teamwork and sportsmanship that was on display all weekend.

U9 Wizards Win at Delco Columbus tournament

U9 Wizards at Delco

The U9 West-Mont Wizards travelled to West Chester for the Delco Columbus Day tournament weekend. The Wizards playing "up" in the Gold division, played outstanding soccer over two days and ended the weekend as Champions.

The Wizards started the weekend with an excellent 2-0 win over a strong Rose Tree team, Brett Eberly and Cam Carson scoring two superbly taken goals. The Wizards second game against a very tough Radnor team proved to be a solid test of the Wizards growing confidence. Strong defense from Eoin Gowronski, Aiden Hudon, and Brett Leighton dealt well with the talented Radnor offense. The Wizards took the lead with a superb solo run from the halfway line from Brett Eberly. The Wizards then conceded only their second goal all season when the Radnor offence pounced on a loose ball in the box. In the second half, Man of the Match, goalkeeper Danny Zoller, saved a penalty. The Wizards then went on in inspired fashion and finished the job with two very well taken goals by Jake Barrett and a cheeky, direct free-kick from Eoin Gowronski.

Sunday saw the Wizards come up against their toughest competition of the weekend against a very strong West Chester team. The Wizards all played their part in a very hard fought 0-0 tie. Hard work and hustle from the Wizards midfield of Nathan Pierce, Christian Donatelli, and Maclen Lewis held the West Chester team to few offensive chances. The Wizards went close near the end of the game, hitting the post, but 0-0 was a fair result.

The final game of the tournament against Wyoming Valley did not start well, a poor first half display from the Wizards put a lot of pressure on the team going into the second half, knowing they had to win by three clear goals to win the tournament. The only bright spot from the Wizards in the first 25 minutes was a hard working midfield display from Peyton Malloy. Reacting to an inspired half time speech from Team Manager/Assistant Head Honcho Carlos Chamorro, the Wizards put on a superb display of attacking soccer in the second half, a hat-trick from Max Chamorro, and goals from Cam Carson and Nathan Pierce made the final score 6-0. With West Chester only managing a 1-1 tie against Rose Tree, the Wizards were Delco Champions, and deservedly so. Well done boys !! - Coach Brian is very proud of you.

U9 G19-Lazers Finalists at Lou Ramos Classic

Lazers win LRC

Allentown, PA. After an impressive start to the pre-season, the Lazers were ready for action in the Lou Ramos Classic over the Labor Day weekend. The Lazers had the opportunity to play a round robin tournament which pitted the Lazers in an opening game against Triboro. The Lazers opened the scoring and never looked back winning 6-1 in a game that saw some good passing and field positioning. Later on Saturday, the Lazers took on and beat a Bethlehem team to set up once again a battle of unbeaten teams with the Lower Merion SC Storm on Sunday Morning. The girls took on PAGS Division 1 foes in the LMSC Storm and came ready to play. The outlook of the game was positive with a 2-1 lead in the second half. A shot played off of the goalie that was buried to the back of the net was negated by an offside call preventing the Lazers from taking a 3-1 lead. The Lazers would let up two quick goals to lose a spirited match 3-2.

The Lazers would have the opportunity at redemption in the finals with a rematch against the same LMSC Storm. The Lazers came out a bit flat and were scored on about 2 minutes into the game. After an awarded penalty kick, the Lazers were in a 2-0 hole. The Storm played a solid game and came away with a 4-0 win over the Lazers who finished as Finalists in just their second tournament. Coach Mo Gonda noted that she was happy to see that the girls were translating what was taught in practice to the games. Although the girls did not take home the ultimate prize, they were all awarded with medals to acknowledge their hard fought battles.

U10 Boys win YMS Premier Division

Heat At Spirit Tourney
The U10 boys "Heat" continued their assault on trophy hardware with a championship at the YMS Columbus Cup. With victories over Deep Run (3-1) and Piscataway (1-0), the Heat moved on to the semi-finals where they met the hosts, YMS. However, YMS was no match as the Heat dispatched them 3-0 to move on to the finals to meet Greater Chester Valley in a rematch of the Spirit Kickoff Classic final. Once again, the Heat proved to be too tough as they went on to win 3-1 and claim their second high level tournament title this year. Josh Dubost and Gilberto Quintero lead the attack with 4 and 3 goals, respectively. Jake Rogers, Hunter Jones, Nick Harshaw, and Zach Monastero anchored a rock solid defense while goalies Michael Murphy and Michael Gama limited their opponents to just 2 goals all weekend. In the end, it was great team play that propelled the Heat to another title.

U9 G19 Lazers win at the Battle At HillTop Tournament

Lazers at BAH
Royersford, PA. The newly formed U-9 G19-Lazers came together after just two team practices to win the Battle At HillTop Tournament in mid August. The G19-Lazers did so in fine fashion going undefeated and unscored upon tallying 25 goals to none throughout the weekend. The Lazers started their campaign against WCUSC '00 Pride winning 2-0 followed by a 2-0 win over the MUSC Rockers. The Lazers wrapped up the preliminary round with a 6-0 win over the Garnet Valley Fireballs. The Lazers went on later that afternoon to play again the WCUSC '00 Girls Pride with a solid 600 performance. On Sunday, the Lazers had the opportunity to play a spirited match against the WMU Thunder. A win against the Thunder allowed the Lazers to play against the Towamencin Tigers in a battle of the unbeaten for the BAH U-9 Championship. The final game was an exciting match with both teams exchanging shots on goal but neither team was able to capitalize with a score of 0-0 at the end of regulation. In sudden death (or Golden Goal) the Lazers came up on top with a corner kick that found its way to the far post which was buried to the back of the net for the Championship win! The girls got to take home the hardware in their very first tournament under the direction of coaches Mo Gonda and Malcolm Wilson.

U10 Heat Open Season with hardware at Spirit

Heat At Spirit Tourney

The U10 boys, the "Heat," opened their 2009-2010 campaign with a championship at the Spirit Kick off Classic. They came out slow in the first game and subsequently were crushed by GCVSA, 5-1. Hunter Jones supplied the lone goal. However, they picked up their game and finished off FC York with a 3-2 victory. Ben Wise, Hunter Jones, and Josh Dubost finished the goals to give the Heat second place in their bracket. Faced with a semi-final matchup against Lower Merion, the boys came out fighting and soundly finished them off 2-1. Andrew Zielke and Hunter Jones supplied the goals. The victory propelled the Heat into the final where they once again were facing GCVSA. This time, the boys were hungry. Ben Wise opened the scoring with one of three dramatic strikes but GCVSA came back and went ahead 2-1. Ben followed with his second of the day to bring the game level with 30 seconds remaining. Braving intense heat, the boys fought hard in overtime and quickly took a 3-2 lead with the final goal in Ben's hat trick. Hunter Jones closed it out with another goal giving the Heat a 4-2 victory while Michael Murphy held the opponents with a strong effort in goal.
