West-Mont United Soccer Association is delighted to announce its new zonal structure for the upcoming 2018-19 travel season. This new structure, led by an experienced group of professional coaches, will guide the club’s player development, education and ensure the continued excellence of its technical/tactical programs. The aim of the new structure is to develop characteristics in our current and future West-Mont United players in all four-corners of the Player Development Model as represented in the graphic below:
The staff will be working together over the coming weeks and months to review the technical/tactical structure of the club and to implement improvements and enhancements to all aspects of the club: player development, coach education, parent education and technical programs.
The following staff will be assuming new roles within this structure:
Longtime Director, Josh Brown, has been selected to lead the club’s U7/8 Development Academy Program and U9 Travel programs. A former Tranmere Rovers FC, Everton FC and English FA Regional Academy coach, Brown is a NSCAA Advanced National, FA Level 2, & FA Youth Module's 1, 2 & 3 licensed coach. Brown will help develop an enhanced Technical curriculum for player development at those ages.
Matt Rice (Boys) and Steve Sawyer (Girls) will serve as Development Coordinators for the U10-U12 Travel Youth programs, respectively. Sawyer, a former student athlete at Brown University, comes to the club with a wealth of knowledge of the game. He recently received his USSF National C License. Rice, a suitable candidate for the U10-12, has a vast coaching background. His coaching experience includes professional coaching at ‘Southampton’. Both will work with Josh Brown and Dennis Squires to develop a consistent curriculum across the age groups that will best prepare the players for the next step in the player’s pathway.
Our Zone 2 Directors comprise of Dennis Squires (Phase 1) and Steve Small (Phase 2). Squires will operate all of the U13-U14 Boys & Girls Travel and Premier Functions. Squires has a broad playing background at the professional level at Cambridge United F.C. (English League 2) where he progressed to coaching within Cambridge United Academy. He has also worked with the Football Association at Regional Level. Squires as the role of Zone 2 – Phase 1 Director, will continue to develop player technique and foster an understanding of the tactical aspects. The focus of zone 2 development is on physical development, competitiveness and commitment during all sessions. Squires will also continue to enhance and provide the curriculum and coaching education for the clubs’ quality pool of staff coaches.
